The Poovar Island Resorts requires a thorough review to understand and enjoy. And I hope this review will help travelers.
A word about the beach
First,
this is not a beach holiday. This is a place to shut yourself from the world, read, walk and generally do nothing. The Poovar Island Resort is located on one of the bigger islands that dot the Neyyar river. The resort is located close to the estuary where the river flows into the ocean. The resort can be reached only by boat ( free service provided by the resort) and a thin beach separates the resort from the beach. The beach is a stones throw away but reachable by boat which is ever ready at the jetty.
The Poovar beach is filthy. It is a dumping ground for local chicken shops to offload offal and chicken parts are constantly floating in the water. This attracts crows that eat the meat and leave the feathers. The beach is strewn with chicken feathers. This attracts dogs too and they roam in packs sometimes biting people. The crow population has quadrupled endangering the local fauna and flora as they eat bird chicks. The sea is dumped with some kind of waste that froth and can be seen as a brown floating patches. Dead animals like dogs and cats can be seen on the beach and plenty of rubbish like diapers, bottles, clothing etc.
The estuary, a narrow strip of canal where the river meets the sea is a dangerous place due to undercurrents. Dont get emboldened by the sight of kids swimming here as they are fishermen’s kids and expert swimmers.
Never talk to the local kids. Avoid eye contact and do not show them that you carry cash. They greet every boat that comes to the beach with smiles and then ask for money. Once they know you have money then they stick to you like leeches and pester you till you cannot take it any more. We saw people leaving the beach in a hurry due to this.
This used to be the only resort a couple of years back. Now there are resorts mushrooming by the second and the water is very polluted. The local Malayalees have been fighting a losing battle with the resorts and have somewhat restricted the throwing of wastes into the river. The sea is however open zone for everyone. Avoid the green patches on the beach as they are open air toilets for fishermen who have migrated from TN. You get a drop to the beach from the resort jetty ( and it is free) and when you want to come back you just wave your arms to the security personnel who will promptly send you a boat. If you have a queasy stomach, dont go to the beach.
